Fly Tyer Gallery |

Mark Kirchner started dressing classic salmon flies in 1990. His primary interest is with the more obscure salmon fly patterns ranging from dressing tiny Bronze Pirates and Double Evening Stars to creating Fetish Flies tied on bone hooks. As a fly-maker, most of his time has been away from the vise, studying old classic salmon books, learning to make graceful hooks, weaving feather hackles and finding enough mulberry leaves for his silkworms. Mark is currently working on a book that will detail the raising of silkworms and the manufacture of silkworm gut. His tying interests also include feather-wing wet trout flies, steelhead flies and streamers. After fifteen years as a commercial photographer, Mark opened a hand bookbindery, Silver Works Studio, in Newport Beach, California, where he designs custom portfolios and restores old books. Other interests include traditional Japanese carpentry and building Tansu, traditional Japanese cabinetry, using new and restored Japanese hand tools. |
