Autumns on the Spey Introduction

The following is a list of old Speyflies. To every fisherman on the river it will be sufficient to say that the descriptions are take from specimens tied by that accomplished artist, Shanks of Craigellachie. Of whom Mr. Barney Maguire, if he had ever visited the Spey,

might perhaps have sung:

There’s Mister Shanks too, upon the banks too.

Och that’s the fellow that can throw a line

A clever boy too, he can tie a fly too,

For art and practice he does both combined

Old Spey Flies

N.B.-The dubbing or bodies- of all these flies is composed of Berlin wool.The following dressing are copied from the book: Autumns on the Spey by A.E.Knox M.A., F.L.S. Pages 67 and 68

Silver Reech

Same as above, except that silver tinsel and beading are used instead of gold, and gray cock hackle along the body of the fly instead of red cock hackle.

Gold-Green Reech

Body olive composed of a mixture of red, green, and purple fine Berlin wool. Red cock hackle from the neck. Tinsel and beading same as the gold reach. Shoulder hackle and wind ditto.

Silver-Green Reech

Same as above, but with silver tinsel and beading instead of gold.

Gold-Green Fly-

dubbing the same as in Green Reech.

Three of four turns of gold tinsel, according to its width, and between each of theses a single turn of orange silk. Red cock hackle. Wing, teal or gray mallard.

Silver-Green Fly

Same as above, but with silver tinsel and gray and cock hackle.

The flies know as ‘Kings’ are characterized by having alternate bars of gold and silver tinsel. No beading of any kind.

Green King

Body same green as Reech.

Alternate bars of gold and silver tinsel.

Red cock hackle.

Shoulder hackle ,

teal feather,Mallard wing

Purple King

Body lake color, composed of scarlet and purple mixed

Alternate bars of gold and silver.

Hackel gray or red cock according to fancy

Shoulder hackle guinea fowl

Wing mallard

Black King

Body black Alternate bars of gold and silver tinsel.

Hackle Black Cock Shoulder hackle guinea fowl

Wing Mallard

Gold Purple Fly

(commonly called,’ Gold Purdy) Body Purple.

Red cock hackle, with bars of gold tinsel.

Culdrain Fly

This is generally tied on a large hook Black Body

 

Bars of silver tinsel, rather far apart, and between each bar two threads of silk, one orange and on yellow.

Hackel jet-black cock.

Wing gray mallard

Gold Heron

Body Black, with bar of gold tinsel. Between the bars two threads of gold and silver beading.

Hackel very long, slate colored back hackle of the heron.

Wing mallard

Black Heron

Same as the last, but instead of the slate color back hackle of the heron use the tips of back feathers from the breast of the heron.

Carron Fly

Body orange, bars of silver tinsel.

Hackel black feather form the breast of the heron.
