OUR HOME The Virtual Spey Shop is the online branch of River Run Anglers, a small company devoted to fly fishing in general and Spey fishing in particular. We specialize in Spey casting & fishing instruction and the sale of top quality Spey fishing rods, reels, lines, leaders, and flies. The VSS was born from a 20 year passion for two-handed rods which led to an obsession with the idea of creating a shop that offered proper instruction, matched tackle, and solid advice. The obsession has finally been realized and your hosts, Aaron and Susan Reimer, welcome you to our web site and our shop. The word "Spey" as it applies to a style of fishing and the tackle that attends this style, derives from the River Spey in Scotland. This river was known for its high, wooded banks, nasty winds, and bounty of Atlantic Salmon. Knowing the latter, and in light of the former, any good Scot worth his weight in single-malt would simply have to find a way to cast a fly to the fish. Consider, too, the kilt. Mel Gibson's Braveheart showed the modern world what a Scotsman wore under his kilt: nothing but the breeze. No self-respecting gentleman angler, slinging 7/0 flies, wants that fly whistling toward his privies. Taking all these concerns into consideration, a method of fly fishing was developed that uses a long rod and a cast such that the fly never goes behind the angler. The modern Spey rod, having been continually evolving, is much changed from the original solid wood rods of the early Scottish angler, but the idea that the fly must never travel behind the angler still remains. Today, as yesterday, there is no back cast to a Spey cast. By using Spey fishing tackle and techniques, your old rivers will yield up new avenues of angling. No longer are you limited by your back cast; no longer must you wade deeply and dangerously; no longer will you wear yourself out casting to distant fish. Now the beautiful, fully aerialized Spey cast is yours to master and, when mastered, it will make you master of your home waters. |
